Dear Sirs:

Mark Brown has studied printmaking with me at Foothill College for the

past two years. He has worked in etching and photo-etching. This year he

has been my teaching assistant in photo-etching, guiding new students through

darkroom work and various photo-intaglio processes, and leading critiques of

their work. He is developing some unique images of his own: his etchings

have won acclaim here at Foothill, where he won the top prize for printmaking

in last year's student exhibit -- and also at De Anza College, where his work

has been shown.

He is mature, very intelligent, extremely motivated and hard-working.

Recently he has built a complete intaglio workshop for Smith-Anderson Gallery,

Palo Alto -- so he understands the technical side of printmaking far better than

most students. I feel that he is an excellent candidate for a Master's Program

-- that he is capable of working independently at a high level.

							Sincerely yours,

							Edith Smith
